Things are about to get hellish.

Okay, so maybe I made it sound like things already were hellish, since I was doing a terrible job at adjusting to being here. But really, first came the homesickness and the Book History work, then came all the trying to catch up after switching programs in week four, then two tests and a paper, and now come all the big group (and lone) projects. I just really can’t catch a break.

So I’ve decided to make a list. A list of things that make me happy in spite of myself. Now, I could give you a list of nice, wholesome things- like tea and chocolate and rain- but instead I think I’ll give you a list of random video clips. Still, I’ll start out with a story by Anne Lamott, just for good measure.

Here is the list:

1. This story from “Bird by Bird” by Anne Lamott: “I also remember a story that I know I’ve told elsewhere but that over and over helps me to get a grip: thirty years ago my older brother, who was ten years old at the time, was trying to get a report on birds written that he’d had three months to write, which was due the next day. We were out at our family cabin in Bolinas, and he was at the kitchen table close to tears, surrounded by binder paper and pencils and unopened books on birds, immobilized by the hugeness of the task ahead. Then my father sat down beside him, but his arm around my brother’s shoulders, and said, ‘Bird by bird, buddy. Just take it bird by bird.’

“I tell this story again because it usually makes a dent in the tremendous sense of being overwhelmed that my students experience. Sometimes it actually gives them hope, and hope, as Chesterton said, is the power of being cheerful in circumstances that we know to be desperate.”
